A dear friend and advanced reader wrote to me this morning after reading the last page of my soon-to-be-published historical (lots of romance, but no HEA)…”Laura, you broke my heart last night! I finished The Lark about 11:30.” And so I am re-blogging the post below, because I kept a lot of my darlings, my sentimental prose, and it seems to have worked magic:)

Unhurried story telling like what Tolkien does with dialog and settings in The Lord of the Rings immerses the reader, but modernist minimalism can be effective, too.
